One of the participants in The Silmarillion Seminar mentioned in an early discussion that each chapter in the book could have been an outline of a stand-alone work. Whether or not that is something Tolkien might have contemplated is an open question, but I wish he'd been able to publish the work during his lifetime.
The iTunesU podcasts were helpful for the first chapters, but I've found it harder and harder to make time to listen once the Noldor return to Middle Earth. I've read several other books during the past twenty weeks, but not at the rate of a book a week.
